Blake Von D.
With features on Glamour.com, The Budget Fashionista, Essence.com, Refinery29 and Fashion Bomb Daily, Blake Von D is quickly making a name for herself in the world of fashion. With a bachelor’s degree from Spelman College in Psychology, Master of Social work from New York University and a few classes short of receiving a degree in law from Tulane University, Blake is the true definition of Brains and Beauty.
Thank you so much for sitting down with us Blake. First things first, how old are you and where are you from? I am 26 years old. In regards to where I’m from, I was born in Macon, Georgia. I lived in NYC for 2 years, and I currently live in New Orleans.
I’ve always wanted to visit NOLA, but have never been. What led you to move from New York City to New Orleans? I graduated from Spelman College in 2009 with a Bachelor in Psychology. After taking a year off from school to work, I attended New York University where I received a Master of Social Work. I am currently in law school at Tulane University.
What inspired you to start blogging? I started blogging right around the time I was getting ready to graduate from college. I was so confused about what to do next with my life and more than a little afraid of the unknown. I originally used this space as a place to vent about (and hopefully get some clarity on) the things happening in my life. As my audience grew, I started to notice that people really responded to my budget friendly approach to style and fashion, so I began to revamp the direction of my blog. Over the past four years I’ve continued trying to marry my need to inspire women, improve my writing skills and showcase my love of fashion into one cohesive voice.
As a woman that has had great success in the fashion blogging arena, what advice would you give someone who is looking to start a blog? The hardest part of being a new blogger is just having the courage to start. So my first piece of advice would be…”Just do it!” After you’ve gotten over that hurdle, the rest is just about finding your niche, being consistent, having a nice clean design, good quality photos, and most importantly, staying true to yourself. Building a readership takes time, and it doesn’t happen overnight. Be patient. Don’t compare your blog to other blogs, but also don’t be afraid to learn from the examples set forth by your favorite bloggers.
